Introduction to biometrics

What are biometrics?

Biometrics is any automated process that identifies a person by their physical characteristics. Examples of biometric technology include facial recognition, fingerprints and iris patterns.

What is a biometric passport?

The British biometric passport will have a new design with additional security features, including a chip which contains information about the holder\'s facial features.

Why is the UK introducing biometrics in its passports?

The increasing threat of identity fraud means we need to strengthen security features in passports. The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO - which sets international standards) chose facial recognition as the primary biometric, with iris and fingerprints as a backup. The use of biometric information to link a person to a passport can help counter identify fraud. Biometric verification can be used at borders, and to check the photo on a passport renewal application against photos held on record.

The use of biometric information to link a person to a passport serves a dual role:
" It helps to detect counterfeit or manipulated documents
" It confirms the identify of the individual

How will facial biometrics work?

Facial recognition maps various features on the face, such as the distances between eyes, nose, mouth and ears. The measurements are digitally encoded and held on an electronic chip in the passport, which can be used for comparison and verification. Applicants\' facial biometrics are obtained from their passport photos.

How will the new passport be different?

The new biometric passport cover will be very similar to the current one, but will have a logo to show it contains a chip. Inside there will be many new security features, including pages with intricate designs and new complex watermarks, to make it harder to forge.

What information will be stored on the chip?

The chip will store the passport holder\'s digital photo and signature, and other personal details printed on the passport information page. The chip will complement existing security features in the "machine readable zone", the two lines of data at the bottom of the data page. Your data on the chip are protected against electronic "eavesdropping" by advanced digital encryption.

Do I need a biometric passport to enter the United States?

If you now hold a UK machine readable, digital passport, you will be able to enter the US visa-free for the life of that passport. Any full UK passport issued after 26 October 2006 must be (and will be) biometric to allow you to enter the US without a visa.

Do I need to submit different/additional documentation to apply for a biometric passport?

No.  The way to apply for a biometric passport is identical to the current procedure: there are no new forms.  However the standard of photo you attach to your application is critical. If your photos do not meet the required standard, your application will be returned to you. Photo requirements.
