Our High Commission in Canberra
In Australia, the British High Commissioner represents the British Government in its relations with the Australian Government. The Rt Hon Baroness Amos, took up her appointment as British High Commissioner to Australia on 25 October 2009.
The High Commissioner's tasks are to present British policies to the Australian Government and to Australians, to report and explain Australian policies and views to the British Government in London, and to promote British interests. The High Commissioner co-ordinates the political, commercial and public affairs activities of the British Government in Australia and is in daily contact with Australian Ministers and officials.
Outside Canberra, there are British Consulates-General in Sydney and Melbourne where the senior officer is known as the Consul-General. There are also consulates in Brisbane and Perth.
The duties of the Consuls-General and Heads of Post in the Consulates relate to the promotion of trade and investment between Britain and Australia. They also keep the High Commissioner in touch with political, economic and other developments in the States and Territories.
In addition, the Consulates-General and Consulates provide consular assistance to British nationals who live in, or are visiting, their consular district. Brisbane covers Queensland and the Northern Territory, Melbourne covers Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, Perth covers Western Australia, and Sydney covers New South Wales.
All UK passport applications and enquiries are handled by the Regional Passport Processing Centre in Wellington, New Zealand. All visa applications and enquiries are dealt with by the Visa Section in Canberra. The Consulates-General and Consulates in Australia do not handle these matters, although passport (but not visa) application forms are available at their offices. Passport applications must be lodged via Australia Post. Visa applications must be submitted online.
Finally, the British Government is represented by Honorary Consuls in Adelaide, Alice Springs, Cairns, Darwin and Hobart.
