Where are birth, death and marriage certificates kept - and can I marry in the UK?
The General Register Office issues birth, marriage, civil partnership and death certificates in England and Wales. It also holds records for overseas records.
The marriage link also includes useful information on how to go about organising a wedding in England and Wales. (This does not include visa information for marrying in the UK - for that you need to contact our Visa Section.)
There are equivalent register offices for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
If you are a British national planning to marry in a non-Commonwealth country and you need a Certificate of No Impediment or you want to lodge a notice of intended marriage, click here.
