"Coal: The elephant in the room" (08/09/2009)
The UK's Special Representative for Climate Change, Mr John Ashton, will challenge many of the myths and misperceptions surrounding the carbon debate during a major speech at the Australian National University (ANU) on Thursday 10 September.
As the British Government's leading authority on climate change, Mr Ashton is in Australia to discuss carbon capture storage technology with industry, business and government officials. He will focus on whether coal can be carbon neutral and climate compatible through carbon capture and storage.
Mr Ashton's view is that "Coal is the elephant in the room; we need to find a way to tame it. The success of all our efforts to prevent dangerous climate change and to limit average temperature rises to two degrees, depend on the rapid and extensive deployment of carbon capture and storage technology."
His speech will be delivered at 12:30pm at Llewellyn Hall, ANU. Media are invited to attend.
