Head of International Institutions addresses ANU's National Europe Centre (03/03/2009)
A senior British official will take part in a roundtable event at the Australian National University about reform of international institutions.
Anwar Choudhury is Director International Institutions at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. During his visit to Canberra, he is addressing the National Europe Centre in Canberra.
He is also meeting officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Treasury, AusAID and Prime Minister and Cabinet.
Strengthening the International Institutions is one of the UK’s top foreign policy priorities. In the FCO, Anwar Choudhury is responsible for UK’s policy and relations with the UN, the EU, NATO, the G8, the Commonwealth, the US, the World Bank and the IMF. Reform of the latter is particularly important as the global community seeks to restore confidence to the financial system.
Mr Choudhury is also responsible FCO’s Human Rights, Governance and Democracy policy and organisations. He took up this position from May 08.
Before taking up his current position, Mr Choudhury served as Her Majesty’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh from 2004 to May 2008. He was the first senior British Ambassador from a British Asian background. During his tenure UK Bangladesh relationship was considerably expanded and strengthened and moved on to a strategic new height.
Mr Choudhury has had a unique and distinguished career having served in British Industry, The Royal Air Force, The Ministry of Defence and The Cabinet Office.
